Aussie author Richard Flanagan has been installed the $8 outsider at to win the Man Booker prize with his novel The Narrow Road To the Deep North.

Sportingbet makes How To Be Both by Ali Smith its $3.50 favourite, in front of J by Howard Jacobson ($5) and Neel Mukherjee’s The Lives Of Others ($5.50).

“We’ll be cheering for Flanagan but the short-list looks extremely strong this year,” William Hill’s Andrew Brown said.

“We’ve been wrong with these markets plenty of times before though and our punters will quickly let us know if our odds for Flanagan’s novel are too generous.”
